However, it offered a subtle yet striking demonstration: even a small country can stand up to a great power, with calm and determination.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has a painful memory of his interview in the Oval Office in February 2025, a meeting that turned into a brawl. Nothing of the sort, however, for the annual meeting between the American president and the Taoiseach, the official title of Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin.

When Donald Trump raged against NATO, creating palpable tension, the Irish Prime Minister toned it down. He thus declared: « I am certain that the European leaders and the American government will hold discussions, and I hope we will find common ground. ».

The American president, still smarting from the refusal of the United States« allies regarding the Strait of Hormuz, then resumed speaking. He then silenced the journalists to reply to his guest: " I agree with everything you say, but we helped with Ukraine, and they aren't helping with Iran. ».

Donald Trump then launched into his usual criticisms of Europe.

He notably affirmed that she was heading for ruin if she did not rapidly end immigration and the energy transition.

Micheál Martin then objected, still calmly, that Europe remained a « Very good place to live ». He then added: « Europe is sometimes falsely described as being invaded ».
With these words, he responded to the US president while arguing for immigration governed by rules « Robust and fair ».

During this US-Ireland meeting, the Irish Prime Minister even gave his support to his British counterpart Keir Starmer, who was attacked by Donald Trump. He stated: «I think he is a very sincere and sensible person.»
This support may seem surprising given the history between the two countries.

He also discreetly put things right when Donald Trump extolled the virtues of Winston Churchill.« In Ireland, the perspective was somewhat different », he noted with a smile. He then recalled that the latter had caused « its own set of difficulties » to his country.

Donald Trump was also asked about the position of Irish President Catherine Connolly, who condemned the war in Iran. « Look, he's lucky I exist. », he replied, not realising it was a woman.

Ireland and Brittany: Populations

Polite firmness in the face of American power

Where some leaders would have adopted a cautious or even withdrawn stance, the Irish head of government chose another path. He thus embodied a polite, controlled, and assured firmness.

In this respect, we should recall the attitude of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in early March. When Donald Trump had criticised the United Kingdom and Spain, he had ultimately repeated his remarks. He was subsequently sharply criticised, notably by the Spanish government.

Thus, without fanfare or provocation, Ireland managed to assert its voice against one of the world's greatest powers. Where force might have imposed silence, it was restraint that allowed them to be heard.

The courage of small countries: a political lesson

This diplomatic scene recalls a reality often overlooked. A country's courage is not measured solely by its size, military might, or economic weight.
On the contrary, it lies in its ability to defend its values. It also rests on his resolve not to give in to pressure. Finally, it is expressed in the ability to make an independent voice heard, even when facing the most powerful.

So, in the Oval Office, on that day, it wasn't power that dominated the exchange. It was dignity that left its mark on people's minds.
So Ireland has proved that a small country can, at times, show far greater courage than the major powers.

Join Yes Breizh.
Support Yes Breizh.

Faced with Donald Trump, Ireland demonstrates that a small country can stand up to the United States with calm, firmness, and dignity.

[1
126,119,120,118,123,128,117,129,121,124,127,125,122
post-1567","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-publications","tag-courage-politique","tag-diplomatie","tag-donald-trump","tag-etats-unis","tag-europe","tag-geopolitique","tag-irlande","tag-maison-blanche","tag-micheal-martin","tag-otan","tag-petits-pays","tag-politique-internationale","tag-relations-internationales
["GET
